IBJJF Weigh-In Rules Explained

Short answer: At IBJJF events, you weigh in before your opening fight, wearing your gi (or the No Gi uniform at no-gi events). You get one attempt. If you miss weight, you’re disqualified immediately. You can’t change divisions, and you don’t get a refund. Other organizations’ rules differ, so check your event’s weigh-in policy.

When you weigh in

At IBJJF events, you check your weight before your first fight.

In the official wording: "Before his/her first fight, the athlete will check his/her weight with the Gi." (IBJJF weigh-ins)

So the weigh-in is part of your match-day flow. Plan for it the way you’d plan for your warm-up or bracket call. You still have to make the scale before you can fight.

If this is your debut, the IBJJF tournament checklist walks through the rest of the day.

What you wear on the scale

At gi events, you weigh in wearing your gi. The rule reads: "All athletes should fight and weigh-in with the Gi." (IBJJF weigh-ins)

Other organizations’ rules differ, so check your event’s weigh-in policy.

At no-gi events, you weigh in "with the No Gi uniform." (IBJJF weigh-ins)

Whatever you wear on the scale is part of your number, so note which uniform you weighed in. More on that in logging gi vs no-gi.

How many attempts

One. The IBJJF says there is a single opportunity to check the weight. (IBJJF weigh-ins)

There’s no second try. Whatever the scale reads on that attempt is your result.

What happens if you miss weight

The consequence is direct: "If the competitor does not make his/her weight, they will be immediately disqualified." (IBJJF weigh-ins)

Two more things follow from that:

The IBJJF puts it this way: "You can not change divisions... no refund." (IBJJF weigh-ins)

A missed weigh-in ends your day in that division.

Where to find your event’s official weight details

Division limits and measurement details can vary from event to event. For the official info on any IBJJF tournament, check that tournament’s "Important Info" section on its event page.

Read it when you register, and again as the date gets close. If something isn’t clear, ask the organizer before you travel.

Picking a division you can make

Track your weight against your division’s limit (from the event page) over time, and decide on a division with your coach or doctor. Pick a division you can make reliably, not one that depends on a last-minute scramble.
